The Kenneth’s Rap Method
Decoding in reading is our process of translating printed words into speech by identifying and sounding out phonics first.
Immediately recognising vowels, consonants, consonant digraphs (2 consonants together that form a special sound) and vowel digraphs (2 vowels together that form a special sound) builds confidence in learners.
12 words, learned by heart, that together contain 26 short phonics, give learners reference sounds to revert to and apply.
They are visualised on our character “Kenneth”.
When the 12 words, that are printed on our character Kenneth, have been learned by heart, an important first step to reading English has been established.
Learners are then invited to read a story about the game of cricket where every letter on one page has been coloured-coded green, black or magenta and every letter on the accompanying page, black.
Tackling and reading an entire book is satisfying and confidence building.
